Computer For 8X 1080p 2.1mp Cameras

Here is a great place to discuss hardware experiences with other Blue Iris users, and where you can give each other feedback on what you have had the most success with.

Computer For 8X 1080p 2.1mp Cameras

Post by MBit » Sun Jan 20, 2019 3:04 am

Hello everyone,

I would like to purchase a computer to only run Blue Iris but am not convinced on which processor and spec to get. I currently have 10 x 1080p 2.1mp 25 fps cameras. Can someone point me in the right direction of what processor I should get, and amount of ram? I was thinking the i7 6700 and 8gb of ram but think it might be overkill for what I need. I would really like a computer that has just enough power to handle the 10 x 1080p 2.1mp @ 25 fps and record motion events on all the cameras. Any input is greatly appreciated!

After a lot of reading, I decided on an i5-6500 for a similar use. I was concerned with power consumption due to the long term costs associated with running a surveillance server 24/7. I plan to have no more than 10 cameras in the 2mp range, running at 15fps. For that load, an i5-6500 with 8Gb RAM should be fine, and the SSD helps keep power/noise/heat down. I added a 4Tb WD Purple drive, which should have all the capacity I need; ymmv.

I found a used Dell ProDesk 600 G2 for $280. I see the price has gone up to $320.

I've heard that similar systems can be had for around $200, but I didn't find any close to that cheap, and I didn't feel like spending more time hunting for a better deal. The HP EliteDesk version has more internal drive bays, but the ProDesk (at least this version) has enough space for a few 3.5" drives, which is all I'll ever need.

You can get a rough idea of what people are using by reviewing the data collected by bp2008's app:

Thank you so much for the reply! I purchased the 6700 2 days before your reply... oh well. I picked up a Lenovo ThinkStation P310 SFF for $313 on ebay and it should be here soon. It has 8gb of ram and 1TB HDD. I also purchased an ssd for it. I will reply after I have it all running.

Sounds good. You may find that HDD doesn't have enough capacity, but it should be an easy upgrade if that's the case. Good luck!

LOL indeed. I got banned from that forum by fenderman after my second post. (My fastest ban from a forum yet!)

I'm also looking for a second computer to set up only for BI. What might be good for the SSD, 256GB? Maybe I could even get away with 128GB since this is all it will do. BI won't make an SSD fail early due to too many writes, will it? (I'm guessing not since these things are supposed to automatically spread their writes evenly across the disk and not write over the same spot forever.)
